Crime zones turned to peace zones

Local activists are on a mission to turn areas into peaceful zones. These areas were taken over by violence and crime. Recently, Women4Action Factreton collaborated with IPYG(International Peace Youth Group) to clean a recreational park within the Factreton community. This collaboration would enhance awareness of peace and health. At first, this park was designed for young people to participate in sporting activities and children to play freely after school.

Unfortunately, the park has been taken over by gangs recently. People in community have been afraid to walk by due to gang violence. As children cleaned the park, people shared stories about how they wanted to restore the area.

The clean-up was a part of IPYG’s Peace My City campaign. IPYG’s Peace My City campaign is being rolled out in various areas. This campaign became possible through the assistance of ward councillors, the youth and women’s organizations.

The Peace My City initiative was launched on 22 April 2017 in Gugulethu. Various communities are practising. With this campaign,  crime and violence zones are transforming into peace zones. The group says“The campaign is an international movement challenging organizations, groups, companies and civil society to identify deserted areas, areas associated with killing, violence and any form of conflict with the intention of refurbishing them into becoming peace zones," in a
statement.
