[HWPL] New Committee Launches to Bridge Korean Peninsula Divide

and Focus on Legal Framework for Unification

South Korea – March 14, 2025 – At the “HWPL’s 9th Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW)“ held in South Korea, a significant step toward Korean Peninsula unification was taken with the launch of the “Preparatory Committee for Peaceful Unification on the Korean Peninsula.” The event, themed ”Building Bridges for Korean Reunification: Establishing Legal and Practical Frameworks for Peace”, drew about a thousand domestic and international leaders, outlining a comprehensive plan for a nationwide peace and unification initiative.

Spearheaded by HWPL, a UN ECOSOC-accredited international NGO, the <Together: Connecting Korea> campaign, involving approximately 170 civic groups, aims to foster communication and harmony across Korean society. The newly formed committee will focus on expanding socio-cultural exchanges between North and South Korea and establishing a robust foundation for future unification.

Carlos Rene Hernandez Castillo, President of Central American Parliament, said in his speech saying “(HWPL’s) tireless work is proof that peace is not just an ideal but an achievable goal when there is will and action. The Central American Parliament firmly supports all unification and integration initiatives that promote peace, such as the dialogue for the reunification of the Koreas,”

 Chairman Man Hee Lee of HWPL said, presenting a vision for peaceful unification on the Korean peninsula “The expeditious path to unification lies in the implementation of free movement. It is imperative that we pursue unification through constructive dialogue without force. Our country must become a testament to peace. We should work together thereby future generations can be happy and our wishes can come true”.

Ven. Seok Yeonhwa, Chairman of the Supreme Patriarch of the World Buddhist Sangha Council, detailed the committee’s future plans by saying, “We will unite people's hearts through campaigns, expand the public understanding and support for unification through education, and conduct research on post-unification social and economic integration.”

Kim Yeong-geun, the 32nd Rector of Sungkyunkwan emphasized the critical role of civilian exchanges, calling for “a legal and institutional framework to ensure their continuity, regardless of political shifts.”

A cornerstone of the event was the presentation of a draft of “The Constitution Establishing a Unified Korea” by Professor Ciarán Burke of Friedrich-Schiller University Jena. Developed by the HWPL International Law Peace Committee, this draft establishes legal foundations for a unified Korea, including denuclearization goals and a peace system that protects citizens’ rights and welfare. “(This initiative) will be furthering the cause of Korean unification, of future stability, and ensuring that the region – and the world – is likely to remain a more peaceful place," said Prof. Burk.

The Together Campaign’s “Connect Korea Challenge” (https://togetherconnectkorea.kr/) is actively promoting unification through advocating free movement and international support. Within 10 days, participants from 243 cities across 72 countries contributed over 1,350 pieces of content, demonstrating global interest in a peaceful unification on the Korean Peninsula.

The seeds of peace are being sown in Pakistan’s education sector, thanks to the Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) and its innovative peace education. HWPL's practical and actionable educational approach, delivered through its peace curriculum, has garnered significant attention from educators worldwide.

Among the many institutions adopting HWPL's peace education, the Millennium Education School stands out as a prime example of transformative implementation. The school's founder and CEO, Chaudhry Faisal Mushtaq, has embraced the values of peace education and integrated them into the school’s educational system, earning widespread recognition.

In 2023, Sabina Zakir, a senior director of the school, attended HWPL's 9th Annual Commemoration of the September 18th World Peace Summit and experienced the potential of HWPL peace education firsthand. Upon returning, the school launched a training program for teachers to become certified peace educators under HWPL’s guidance, encouraging them to embrace peace education actively.

Through initiatives such as peace sports competitions and public speaking events, the school has fostered a sense of peace among its students, transforming itself into a "peace school.”

A Wave of Change Starting in Atlanta

Atlanta, USA, is a city rich in diversity and historical significance, symbolized by Martin Luther King Jr.’s nonviolent peace movement. However, the community still grapples with persistent challenges like racial discrimination and gun violence. Amidst these struggles, HWPL's peace education has planted seeds of hope, empowering students and the local community to foster positive change and make a meaningful impact.

▎ The First Step of Peace Education in Atlanta

In 2022, Ruth Perez, a former peer counseling teacher at Sunrise Middle School in Atlanta, recognized the importance of peace education and worked to integrate it into the school’s counseling curriculum. Her efforts led to the first implementation of HWPL peace education at Sunrise Middle School. Since then, HWPL has signed MOUs with three educational organizations in Atlanta, actively expanding its peace education programs.

Currently, there are seven peace educators operating in Atlanta, sharing the values of peace across elementary schools, high schools, and local nonprofit organizations.

▎ Peace Education and Camps: Moving Students' Hearts

HWPL peace education was introduced to Atlanta in 2021 through a local radio program and officially began in 2022 at Sunrise Middle School. Students participating in peace education explored their personal values and engaged in team projects to foster collaboration and understanding.

Notably, the partnership with 100 Black Men of DeKalb County brought peace education to middle and high school students, creating a significant impact. After the sessions, students took practical steps to promote peace in their communities through volunteer activities.

Peace camps also provided students with an opportunity for in-depth learning. For example, in 2022, youth from the Atlanta Youth and Young Adult Choir attended a three-day camp where they wrote and composed songs about peace, producing a music video to share their message.

▎ Transforming Students: From Hatred to Peace

Peace education has sparked profound changes in students. One student shared, “I used to think forgiveness was something weak people did to accept their situation, but now I realize forgiveness is the key to building a relationship with oneself.” Another remarked, “Hatred corrupts the soul, leading to darkness and unhappiness,” emphasizing the importance of peace.

Through these experiences, students began to overcome biases and work towards understanding themselves and others, guided by the values of peace and legacy.

▎ The Positive Impact of Peace Education on Communities

HWPL peace education does more than teach students; it drives transformative changes in the community as a whole. Empowered by the values of peace, students lead initiatives like volunteering and community discussions, becoming catalysts for societal improvement.

Ruth Perez expressed her belief in the program's potential: “Not all students will grow the seeds of peace, but for some, these seeds will take root and grow into trees of peace.”

[HWPL] Eight schools signed the MOU... Teachers are experiencing increased satisfaction, saying, 'It's rewarding to see the changes in students.'"

Bangladesh has become a prominent country for HWPL peace education, signing MOUs with eight schools, including Shamshul Hoque Khan School. The initiative has seen strong support from educators, particularly Dr. Mabubur Rahman Molla, the principal of Shamshul Hoque Khan School, who was inspired by HWPL's commitment to peace after witnessing a large peace conference in Seoul in 2014. His leadership has led to the implementation of peace education programs in multiple schools, emphasizing the importance of cultivating students as messengers of peace.

Since the introduction of the HWPL peace education curriculum in 2017, schools like Uttara Model School have actively engaged in peace education and training for teachers. Principal Abdul Momin established the school to improve equitable educational opportunities in the region and sees HWPL's curriculum as a means to foster harmony among students. He and other educators believe that teaching peace is essential for shaping responsible future leaders.

As of now, a total of 36 teachers from eight schools have participated in peace teacher training programs. Teachers have expressed their fulfillment in teaching peace values and guiding students towards positive change. They emphasize that nurturing a peaceful mindset among students is crucial for a brighter future. With a significant youth population, Bangladesh recognizes the importance of quality education in shaping national prospects, currently ranking 91st out of 163 countries in the Global Peace Index.
