A Seed of Peace Blossoms in Malawi –
The Beautiful Beginning of HWPL Peace Education

▎“Do not delay peace—let’s begin today, right now.”
The powerful words by Korean peace advocate Man Hee Lee sparked an inspiring transformation in Malawi. Moved by this message, a school principal in Malawi immediately decided to bring peace education to his students. Isn’t that just incredible?

▎ Peace Education Begins at Zingwangwa Secondary School in Malawi
Steven Kungala, the principal of Zingwangwa Secondary School in Blantyre, Malawi, attended the 9th Annual Commemoration of the HWPL Peace Summit held in Seoul last September. There, he was deeply touched by HWPL’s peace education initiative, and especially by Man Hee Lee’s call to action: “Let’s begin peace today, without delay.”

Without hesitation, Principal Kungala decided to implement peace education at his school. Today, Zingwangwa Secondary School proudly stands as the first school in Malawi to officially carry out HWPL Peace Education.

▎ Peace Reaches Students’ Lives Through a “Peace Club”
In a country where student club culture is already vibrant, Principal Kungala took the initiative to launch the HWPL ZGSS Peace Club at his school. This club is more than just an extracurricular activity—it’s a space where students learn to reduce bullying, practice empathy, and foster mutual respect.

He said “The purpose of this club is to cultivate a spirit of love and understanding”, emphasizing the importance of students listening to others with open hearts rather than clinging rigidly to their own opinions.

As chairman of the Principals’ Association in Blantyre, Principal Kungala also plans to expand peace education to other secondary schools across the region. The ripple effect of peace, spreading across Malawi, is something we can all look forward to.

▎ Teachers Join the Journey of Peace
Ten teachers from Zingwangwa have completed the HWPL Peace Educator Training Program, and they all agree: peace is a vital education that shapes the future of young people.

Janet Pemba, one of the trained educators, shared, “If we plant peace in today’s youth, tomorrow’s world will surely embrace that same spirit.” Precious Jabu added, “Peace education helps students understand and embrace different ideologies and cultures—it’s a bridge to diversity and harmony.”

The teachers were also moved by HWPL’s broader peace efforts around the globe, which further strengthened their belief in the program’s significance.

▎ Peace Blooming in Beautiful Nature
Known as the “Land of Lakes,” Malawi is home to the stunning Lake Malawi, surrounded by diverse cultures, languages, and ethnic groups. In this beautiful and richly diverse setting, the effort to sow peace is all the more meaningful.

HWPL Peace Education in Malawi is more than a curriculum. It is becoming a real practice that changes people's lives. And this change began with the courage and passion of one principal, a group of dedicated teachers, and their students.

▎ In Closing
Our world is still plagued by war, conflict, and discrimination—but stories like this remind us that there are people planting seeds of peace every day.
From one small school in Malawi, a movement is growing—one we hope to see spread across the globe.

What kind of peace are you practicing today?
