[HWPL Peace Education] The Reality of Peace Education:
A Wave of Change Starting in Atlanta

Atlanta, USA, is a city rich in diversity and historical significance, symbolized by Martin Luther King Jr.’s nonviolent peace movement. However, the community still grapples with persistent challenges like racial discrimination and gun violence. Amidst these struggles, HWPL's peace education has planted seeds of hope, empowering students and the local community to foster positive change and make a meaningful impact.

▎ The First Step of Peace Education in Atlanta

In 2022, Ruth Perez, a former peer counseling teacher at Sunrise Middle School in Atlanta, recognized the importance of peace education and worked to integrate it into the school’s counseling curriculum. Her efforts led to the first implementation of HWPL peace education at Sunrise Middle School. Since then, HWPL has signed MOUs with three educational organizations in Atlanta, actively expanding its peace education programs.

Currently, there are seven peace educators operating in Atlanta, sharing the values of peace across elementary schools, high schools, and local nonprofit organizations.

▎ Peace Education and Camps: Moving Students' Hearts

HWPL peace education was introduced to Atlanta in 2021 through a local radio program and officially began in 2022 at Sunrise Middle School. Students participating in peace education explored their personal values and engaged in team projects to foster collaboration and understanding.

Notably, the partnership with 100 Black Men of DeKalb County brought peace education to middle and high school students, creating a significant impact. After the sessions, students took practical steps to promote peace in their communities through volunteer activities.

Peace camps also provided students with an opportunity for in-depth learning. For example, in 2022, youth from the Atlanta Youth and Young Adult Choir attended a three-day camp where they wrote and composed songs about peace, producing a music video to share their message.

▎ Transforming Students: From Hatred to Peace

Peace education has sparked profound changes in students. One student shared, “I used to think forgiveness was something weak people did to accept their situation, but now I realize forgiveness is the key to building a relationship with oneself.” Another remarked, “Hatred corrupts the soul, leading to darkness and unhappiness,” emphasizing the importance of peace.

Through these experiences, students began to overcome biases and work towards understanding themselves and others, guided by the values of peace and legacy.

▎ The Positive Impact of Peace Education on Communities

HWPL peace education does more than teach students; it drives transformative changes in the community as a whole. Empowered by the values of peace, students lead initiatives like volunteering and community discussions, becoming catalysts for societal improvement.

Ruth Perez expressed her belief in the program's potential: “Not all students will grow the seeds of peace, but for some, these seeds will take root and grow into trees of peace.”

▎ In Conclusion: Peace Is Our Future

HWPL peace education in Atlanta is more than a program—it is a model of the values and vision humanity must pursue. In a multicultural and diverse society like the United States, peace is not optional but essential. Through education, the roots of peace are spreading, offering hope for a better future.

Peace is not an abstract concept but a way of life that requires action. The changes sparked in Atlanta hold the promise of expanding across the United States and even the world.

▎ Washington, D.C., the City Planting Seeds of World Peace, and HWPL’s Peace Education

Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States and a global hub of politics and economy, holds immense international influence. As a city densely populated with international organizations and embassies, it is not only a political center but also a prominent stage for global peace and cooperation. Amid this, the global private peace NGO Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) has drawn attention by planting seeds of peace through its peace education and seminars in Washington, D.C.

▎ HWPL’s Peace Education: Spreading Hope Worldwide

HWPL has been expanding its peace education efforts through its Washington, D.C. branch, reaching both local and international audiences. In particular, HWPL has collaborated with teachers from Caribbean nations, including the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Antigua and Barbuda, and Haiti, to implement peace education, which has positively impacted both teachers and students.

Josianne Floreus, a teacher at RM Bailey Senior High School in the Bahamas, praised HWPL’s peace teacher training, saying, "The various aspects of peace have become clearer." She highlighted HWPL’s approach of turning abstract concepts into practical education. Her colleague, Renee Bethel, also emphasized that HWPL’s education helps students learn to live harmoniously as children of God, significantly contributing to character development.

▎ Transformations in Students Learning Peace

HWPL’s peace education has had a profound impact on students as well. Shakina, a student at McPherson Primary School in the Bahamas, shared how the training taught her ways to live harmoniously and helped her discover the value of peace in herself and her surroundings. She mentioned experiencing harmony and peace through collective dances and worship, realizing the importance of HWPL’s beautiful approach to life.

▎ Collaborators for Peace: Partnering with HWPL

In Washington, D.C., HWPL is joined by numerous collaborators committed to the mission of peace. Human rights activists like Sirley Avila DeLeon from Cuba, Troy Clarke from the Bahama, and Mitsan Burrows initiative are working alongside HWPL to promote peace education and awareness.

Troy Clarke emphasized the importance of incorporating conflict resolution and human rights education into school curriculums, stating, “Teaching students how to handle conflicts and respect human rights from elementary to high school is crucial for building a more peaceful and safe society.”

▎ HWPL and Washington, D.C.: A Bridge for Peace

HWPL’s peace initiatives go beyond education. In 2021, HWPL Chairman Man Hee Lee visited Washington, D.C., and shared insights on the Mindanao Peace Agreement in the Philippines, garnering support from local leaders. Inspired by Chairman Lee’s efforts, many pledged to join HWPL in advancing peace globally.

▎ Washington, D.C.: A Global Center for Peace

Washington, D.C. is not just a hub for politics and economics but also a vital platform for global peace initiatives. As a city hosting international organizations, embassies, and various institutions, it plays a crucial role in addressing global challenges. HWPL’s peace education and activities further enhance the city’s value and influence.

We look forward to HWPL’s peace education spreading worldwide, fostering harmonious living and global peace. May the efforts of HWPL and Washington, D.C. in planting seeds of peace continue to gain the attention and support they deserve.

[HWPL] Eight schools signed the MOU... Teachers are experiencing increased satisfaction, saying, 'It's rewarding to see the changes in students.'"

Bangladesh has become a prominent country for HWPL peace education, signing MOUs with eight schools, including Shamshul Hoque Khan School. The initiative has seen strong support from educators, particularly Dr. Mabubur Rahman Molla, the principal of Shamshul Hoque Khan School, who was inspired by HWPL's commitment to peace after witnessing a large peace conference in Seoul in 2014. His leadership has led to the implementation of peace education programs in multiple schools, emphasizing the importance of cultivating students as messengers of peace.

Since the introduction of the HWPL peace education curriculum in 2017, schools like Uttara Model School have actively engaged in peace education and training for teachers. Principal Abdul Momin established the school to improve equitable educational opportunities in the region and sees HWPL's curriculum as a means to foster harmony among students. He and other educators believe that teaching peace is essential for shaping responsible future leaders.

As of now, a total of 36 teachers from eight schools have participated in peace teacher training programs. Teachers have expressed their fulfillment in teaching peace values and guiding students towards positive change. They emphasize that nurturing a peaceful mindset among students is crucial for a brighter future. With a significant youth population, Bangladesh recognizes the importance of quality education in shaping national prospects, currently ranking 91st out of 163 countries in the Global Peace Index.

[HWPL Peace Summit] 100,000 people attend HWPL Peace Summit on its 10th Anniversary, Launch of the 'Together Campaign'

[HWPL  Peace Summit] 100,000 people attend HWPL Peace Summit
on its 10th Anniversary, Launch of the 'Together Campaign'

▎ The 10th anniversary celebration held in 122 countries including Korea will continue to convey the message of peace.

▎ The event focused on "Building a Global Peace Community through Regional Cooperation."

▎ The 'Together Campaign,' involving over 230 civic organizations, will implement region-specific activities.

On September 18, the 'HWPL 9.18 Peace Summit 10th Anniversary Ceremony' took place in approximately 40 countries, including South Korea. On this significant day, dignitaries and members from both domestic and overseas gathered, with around 100,000 attendees present at the HWPL Peace Training Center in Gyeonggi Province.

Hosted by the Heavenly Culture World Peace Restoration of Light (HWPL), led by Chairman Man Hee Lee, the event centered on the theme "Building a Global Peace Community through Regional Cooperation." The ceremony honored the contributions of world leaders and citizens towards peace over the past decade and sought strategies for future global harmony. Various dignitaries, including Ven. Hyechong, a prominent monk of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, and Jose Honorio da Costa Pereira Jeronimo, Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Culture of Timor-Leste, were in attendance.

In his commemorative speech, Chairman Man Hee Lee expressed gratitude to all attendees for marking the 10th anniversary of peace efforts. He urged, “Let us not draw lines between 'you' and 'me.' Instead, let us unite with love and peace to heal our world. Let’s collaborate, uplift each other, and leave a legacy of valuable peace for future generations.”

During the ceremony, attendees reviewed tangible results from peace initiatives since 2014 and discussed future plans, focusing on establishing regional networks tailored to local characteristics. This initiative aims to actively address threats to peace and consolidate collective efforts.

In line with the event's theme of inter-regional cooperation, HWPL established partnerships with the Group of Seven Plus (G7+) and the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO) to advance peace initiatives. G7+ was formed to foster unity among conflict-affected countries through peace, stability, and development, with 20 member countries, while PARLATINO promotes development and integration based on democracy, currently comprising 23 member countries.

The ceremony also marked the launch of the national campaign "Together: Connecting the Republic of Korea," along with the signing of a MOU. The "Together" campaign, which began as a pilot in major cities across Korea in July, aims to foster intergenerational culture and implement various peace activities in collaboration with over 230 civil society organizations.

Chairman Lee appointed Kim Dong-hee as the head of the campaign, followed by the reading of the campaign declaration. The declaration emphasized reducing generational gaps and promoting mutual understanding for a better future, committing to create opportunities for respect and understanding among diverse cultures.

The "Together" campaign will carry on the spirit of the Saemaul Movement, which led the economic development and social change in 20th-century South Korea, with various activities being carried out nationwide by citizen participants. Just as the Saemaul Movement achieved national development through the modernization of rural areas and the strengthening of community ties, the ‘Together’ campaign aims to overcome social conflicts arising from differences in generations, regions, genders, and ideologies, based on social solidarity and cooperation.

Additionally, to achieve the "regional network" goal, sessions will be held across various classes in South Korea and worldwide. The slogan "Let Everyone Become a Messenger of Peace" will empower individuals to play a role in promoting peace. Specific efforts will be made to gather and share messages of peace and unity from citizens across various sectors both domestically and internationally.

HWPL, a non-governmental organization under the United Nations Economic and Social Council, originally held the Peace Summit in Seoul in 2014, inviting over 1,000 leaders from political, religious, women’s, youth organizations, and the media from more than 140 countries. This summit addressed issues such as conflict resolution, religious harmony, and the implementation of legal frameworks for sustainable peace.

Celebrating a Decade of Peace: HWPL’s 10th Anniversary

On September 18, the 10th anniversary of the HWPL Peace Summit was celebrated with an inspiring gathering of over 100,000 participants from around the globe, including 122 countries. This landmark event, hosted by the Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), marked a significant milestone in the journey toward building a peaceful global community.

The central theme of the celebration was “Creating World Peace Community Through Regional Collaboration” This theme resonated throughout the event as leaders and citizens reflected on the contributions made over the past decade and strategized for future efforts in global harmony. Notable attendees included prominent figures such as the Venerable Hyechong of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism and Jeronimo dos Reis, the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Culture of Timor-Leste.

In his keynote address, HWPL Chairman Man Hee Lee expressed gratitude to all attendees, emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration. He urged participants to move beyond divisions and to work together, stating, "Let us not draw lines between 'you' and 'me,' but unite through love and peace to nurture our planet."

The event highlighted the practical outcomes of HWPL's peace initiatives since 2014 and focused on establishing regional networks tailored to local contexts. These networks aim to proactively address peace threats in communities, fostering collective strength and collaboration.

Aligning with the event’s theme, HWPL announced new partnerships with the G7+ and the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO) to enhance peace initiatives. These partnerships aim to promote stability and development in conflict-affected regions.

Additionally, the launch of the “DongHaeng: Connecting South Korea” campaign was a highlight of the ceremony. This campaign, involving over 230 civil society organizations, seeks to bridge generational gaps and foster intercultural understanding through various peace activities.

The campaign draws inspiration from the Saemaul Undong, a movement that transformed South Korea's rural landscape in the 20th century, aiming to promote social cohesion and overcome societal divisions based on age, region, gender, and ideology.

As HWPL continues to expand its efforts globally, the vision remains clear: to empower individuals to become peace ambassadors. Through community-driven sessions across diverse sectors, the campaign will share messages advocating for peace and unity.

Since its inception in 2014, HWPL has been at the forefront of promoting dialogue among diverse stakeholders to address conflicts and foster religious harmony. This anniversary celebration not only commemorates past achievements but also sets a hopeful trajectory for a future where peace is a shared responsibility among all.

Let us join hands in this vital mission and work together to create a world where peace prevails.
