HWPL’s 10th Annual Commemoration of

the Declaration of World Peace and the Peace Walk

- New Decade, Making Institutional Peace Take Root -

The 10th Anniversary Commemoration of the Declaration of World Peace and Peace Walk will be held all over the world, including Seoul, South Korea, on May 25, 2023. The event is held under the subtitle of 'New Decade, Making Institutional Peace Take Root', and it was designed to commemorate the significance 'the main spirit of the Declaration of World Peace and Peace Walk which is an international peace movement led by civil society announced in front of the Seoul Peace Gate on May 25, 2013.

At this event, HWPL and partner organizations around the world announce the necessity for institutionalization of peace for sustainable development and announce a joint statement commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Declaration of World Peace, asking global citizens to participate in the LP (Legislate Peace) project. In addition, after the event, a peace walk will be held to call for an end to war in various parts of the world and the enactment of an international law for peace.

HWPL, an international peace NGO, announced the Declaration of World Peace on May 25, 2013, recognizing the seriousness of increasing conflicts across the globe and suggesting that civil society as well as states actively intervene and participate in the establishment and settlement of peace. . The manifesto contains three key proposals. First, the international community enact an international law for peace. Second is to establish a youth peace network around the world. Third, citizens around the world participate in building peace.

To implement this manifesto, HWPL promulgated the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) in 2016 and is carrying out the LP Project, a citizen-led peace movement, around the world to submit it as a resolution to the UN General Assembly. The International Peace Youth Group (IPYG), a youth organization under HWPL, is carrying out various peace projects in partnership with more than 1,000 youth organizations in 119 countries and HWPL is proceeding a business including peace education, interfaith dialogue, peace press, etc with the cooperation of international organizations, governments, and civil society.

HWPL is also promoting 'institutionalization of peace' to realize sustainable peace. One of them is to reaffirm the main principles of international law for peace and to promote the progress of international law in line with the increasingly complex aspects of contemporary conflict. The other is to enable peace to be established as a social structure and culture through institutions such as values, customs, norms, rules and laws. HWPL will continue to promote to achieve the purpose of 'settling the peace system' including introduction of DPCW's resolution to the UN General Assembly over the next decade, implementation of peace education through government and official institutions, regularization of communication channels to promote understanding between religions and resolve conflicts, establishment of a peace consultative body of youth representatives by region and establishment of a network for peace contribution of media.

Meanwhile, in the joint statement of 10th anniversary commemoration of the declaration of world peace, it calls for members of the global community to participate in international cooperation for establishment of a peace system, making clear that the only direction that mankind has to go is peace in the reality of the global community, where disputes between and within countries are increasing.

The peace walk, which has been conducted only online to comply with each country's quarantine guidelines since the pandemic, will again take place offline. On May 25, we will see peace walk shouting 'Legislate Peace (LP)' in major cities around the world.
