Education for the Future of Peace: The Story of HWPL Peace Education
“There is no place under heaven and earth, among all things, more beautiful and suitable for life than this global village. What is the use of hoping for heaven while ruining this beautiful, heaven-like earth? Wouldn’t it be better if we ourselves made this world a good place, turning it into a heaven on earth? Now is the time to educate people with the ideology of a new era of peace. We must transcend nations, races, religions, and ideologies so that all can live together in harmony in a world of peace. To create a truly peaceful world, young people and every individual must be reborn as peace citizens with a correct understanding of peace.
Peace education should not be about simply discussing the past or focusing on limited aspects. It must be an education that allows one to feel the answer to achieving peace through the ongoing peace efforts and to become a messenger of peace who puts it into practice.” — Chairman Man Hee Lee of HWPL
Man Hee Lee, the chairman of HWPL (Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light), does not stop at merely dreaming of peace. He proposes "peace education" as a concrete means to achieve it. Today, let's explore why HWPL focuses on peace education and how it is spreading across the world.
▎What Is HWPL Peace Education?
HWPL's peace education is not simply about learning past wars or conflicts. It is a practical education that allows individuals to experience the ongoing peace movement and realize, “I must also become a messenger of peace.”
This education transcends nationalities, races, religions, and ideologies, laying the foundation for a new era of peace where all of humanity can live in unity. HWPL calls this “ideological education for a new era of peace.”
▎The Link Between DPCW and Peace Education
HWPL’s peace education is based on the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW, 10 articles and 38 clauses), proclaimed in 2016 as an international standard aiming to end all wars.
Among these, Article 10: “Spreading a Culture of Peace” is the core clause related to peace education. It stipulates that nations must recognize and cooperate with peace-seeking organizations globally and facilitate awareness-raising activities, such as providing education and research on human rights and peace, as defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 1999 UN Declaration on a Culture of Peace.
It also emphasizes education that promotes mutual understanding and respect among diverse religious and ethnic groups. This declaration goes beyond a simple campaign, providing a framework for institutionalizing peace education within public education systems.
▎Peace Education Spreading Across the Globe
As of the end of December 2023, HWPL’s Peace Education Department has signed MOUs and MOAs with 351 institutions in 53 countries worldwide, showing remarkable growth.
Asia: 15 countries, 171 institutions (Korea, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, etc.)
Africa: 18 countries, 122 institutions (Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan, etc.)
Europe: 9 countries, 50 institutions (Ukraine, France, Romania, etc.)
Americas: 7 countries, 11 institutions (USA, Guatemala, Jamaica, etc.)
Middle East: 4 countries, 12 institutions (Iraq, Israel, Palestine, etc.)
In particular, HWPL is expanding a credible base for peace education by cooperating with national education ministries, higher education institutions, and national commissions for UNESCO.
Currently, peace education is being conducted at 319 schools, ranging from early childhood institutions to universities. There are also 15 government-affiliated institutions and 27 civil organizations partnered with HWPL’s Peace Education Department.
▎Peace Begins with Education
HWPL states that “Peace is not optional but essential, and it requires the participation of all citizens.” Based on this belief, peace education is seen not as an abstract ideal but as the most realistic and sustainable path toward an achievable future.
Teaching children about peace and instilling a sense of mission in youth—this is how HWPL’s peace education is actively preparing a new world in every corner of the global village.
▎In Conclusion
Peace is not far away. It begins with small actions to make our global village a better place. And the first step is peace education. HWPL’s journey of not only speaking about peace but living it through action will continue.
A new era of peace—dreamed and built together. Would you like to join this journey?
